If someone told me that I could be scared of a movie from 1965 with a skull floating around with visible strings attached to it, I would look at them as they were stupid…

“You see before you the skull of Marquis de Sade!”
Not much of a plot, but that’s definitely not a problem…
Dr. Maitland (Cushing) is a collector of occult items. When he get offered the skull of the Marquis de Sade, the evil from the skull seems to manifest to the owner.
I didn’t care that much about director Freddie Francis until this movie. He had apperantly gotten a script for 50 mins and had to prolong the scenes, something he did in a masterful way. The movie is disturbing all the way. I rarely felt so uncomfortable with a horror from the 60’s, but this Amicus production blew me away! Except from the great direction, the cinematography is beautiful, the set production is flawless and the acting is superb! The whole movie is a freakishly eerie nightmare of a gothic horror! Can’t say more than: WATCH IT, GODDAMN IT!!!
