Review: Master of the Flying Guillotine (1976)

I just found my favourite movie murder weapon: The Flying Guillotine. Do they sell those on ebay?

dvd“MASTER OF THE FLYING GUILLOTINE” (Du bi quan wang da po xue di zi)
Hong Kong/Taiwan

Director: Jimmy Wang Yu
Stars: Jimmy Wang Yu, Kam Kang, Lau Ka Wing
Distributor: Pathfinder
Runtime: 93 mins

“I will kill the one-armed man and avenge you both.”

There’s a time of political unrest in the year of 1730. People are ganging up against eachothers, and rebels against their Manchurian oppressors. A blind assassin comes down from the mountains to avenge his friends who got killed by the “One-armed Boxer”, a teacher at a kung-fu school. The assassin is a master of the murderous weapon called the “Flying Guillotine”. A big tournament is held, and all kinds of martial arts fighters gather in a fight of life and death. Also the blind assassin and the one-armed boxer.

A cult classic. One of the few Hong Kong movies independent of the Shaw Brothers. This is a mash-up of two characters with their own movies (The One Armed Boxer, 1972 & The Flying Guillotine, 1975). This is one hell of a martial arts movie. It’s jam packed with well choreographed fighting scenes, and a bunch of cool characters. This is pure fun from start to the end. It’s definitely a must-see for fans of Asian martial arts movies. And again…what a freakin’ cool weapon the “flying guillotine” is. Holy decapitation!!!

The release is as good as could be at the time of release. Some scenes are really bad, but the state of the negative wasn’t good. Hoping a serious company can brush it up for blu-ray soon. It’s got two discs, one in Mandarin, and one in English. There’s a packed booklet, audio commentaries, interviews and trailers. A dedicated release.
