Review: Sleepaway Camp (1983)

Think about this; Finally alone on the crapper. Maybe you have a “dirty” magazine with you. You put your ultra-tight swimming trunks down. You sit down and get that relaxing feeling. The shit gently starts to slide down your bowel…THEN YOU GET VICIOUSLY STUNG BY A HORDE OF ANGRY BEES!!! Welcome to “The Sleepaway Camp”!

Director: Robert Hiltzik
Stars: Mike Kellin, Katherine Kamhi, Paul DeAngelo
Distributor: Scream Factory
Runtime: 84 mins.

“Last time I saw her, she went next door to take a shower…”

sleepaway1A father and his twin daughter and son get into a brutal accident at a summer camp. One of the kids (Angela) survives and gets raised by a wacky aunt and her son. Eight years later Angela and her cousin Ricky is sent to Camp Arawak for the summer. Angela is shy and gets taunted by other teens. Soon a lot of the bullies turn up dead…

sleepaway3This is a really awesome slasher! Already from the intro-scene the creepy atmosphere settles. The movie stands out from the typical slasher of the time using really young actors, and put in themes that still are taboo; Transgenders, homo-sexuality, pedophilia, heavy cursing and teen-sex. Despite a lack of gore and tits, too small male swimming trunks (and t-shirts) and a policeman with the poorest mustache-put-on I’ve ever seen, this 80’s slasher deliver the goods. Beware! There’s one hell of a jaw-dropping ending that will haunt you for a long long time! A fine attempt from director Robert Hiltzik.

sleepaway5Followed up with a lot of crappy sequels. Only “Return to Sleepaway Camp”(2008) use the original cast.

sleepaway4The quality of this release is very nice. Lots of nice extras that includes a very nice documentary with the stars and crew, a music video by one of the actors, and a new short movie with one of the actresses. Another dedicated job from Scream Factory. Thanks!
