Review: Killer Nun (1979)

20 years has past since Anita Ekberg slithered around in the Trevi fountain in Fellini’s “La Dolce Vita”. Lots can happen in two decades, Ekberg landed the role as the main character in this sleazy nunsploitation.

“Sister Gertrude, you’re a murderer! You’re crazy, completely crazy!”

Sister Gertrude is a highly respected nun at a Belgian catholic mental institution. After an operation she’s turned into a morphine-addict. Badass headaches puts her into a comatose state where she has some crazy fucking dreams and flashbacks. She smokes, drinks, lie, fuck, steal, abuse drugs and kills… or does she!? Is it her behind these gruesome, detailed killings on the institution?

“A true story from the Vatican files” is the tagline on this movie. I go “Yeah, right…” and hit play with an expectation of none (or probably “nun”). Well, this is an exploitation-classic. And why is it a classic?

  • We’ve got a lobotomized milfy nun who’s smashing the Ten Commandment one by one with holy (shit) grace and satisfaction.
  • One of the hottest lesbian nuns in the history of cinema (and yes, she sleeps naked…mmm…).
  • Torture and grotesque murders in a crazed hospital-setting and with groovy dream sequences straight out of a LSD-trip.
  • Everything neatly wrapped in a supercool soundtrack. Lots of nice details.

All in all a titilating, entertaining and well made sleaze-fest!

Fun facts: The man behind the soundtrack, Alessandro Alessandroni, was a talented whistler. He worked with Ennio Morricone as whistler on his great westerns in the 60’s.
