Review: Hammer (1972)

Now I know why the actor is called Fred “The Hammer” Williamson. This role is tailor-made for him.

“Fuck off! He’s not your soulbrother, Nigger!”

The dock worker and boxer, B.J. Hammer is fighting for his life, his credibility as a boxer, his job and woman. The mob wants him to fix the matches for them, but Hammer has another plan.

This is more drama than action. The black man’s “Rocky”, pre-“Rocky”. Williamson plays this character as he should been played. It’s well made, well played, well directed, but a little bit slow. Not a bad movie, but still lacks a bit of…punch!
Thank God Fred went on to more hard-hitting movies afterwards!
