Review: Dark Star (1974)

Bombs that argue, Alien that’s just a beach ball with feet, a dead captain on ice who talks about football, surf music and hippies, all on a space ship. John Carpenter with a spaced out space movie!

A bunch of hippies run around space blowing up useless planets while smoking heavily, listening to surf music, quarrel with bombs and trying to fight off the stupidest looking alien ever been on the silver screen.

Here’s one freakin’ acid trip of a cult movie from John Carpenter and Dan O’Bannon, after watching it you couldn’t believe these guys made Alien and Halloween a couple of years later. It was originally a short-movie made at film-school, made big. It failed massively at the box-office at the time of release, but are now considered a cult flick. I guess that the humour was too trippy for the mainstream audience. It’s cheap, it’s weird, it’s satirical and I’m so glad to have witnessed this cheap madness.

The VCI release have loads of extras, including audio-commentary, featurette, interviews and more. Well worth a buy!
