Review: Nightmare Castle (1965)

I’m always surprised of the level of sadistic violence in these old Italian horrors.

A sadistic Count tortures and murder his wife and her lover. He’s remarrying his late wifes lookalike stepsister. The stepsister starts to experience nightmares about the horrible story of the mansion. Things take a turn for the worse, and her doctor moves in to try to figure out what’s happening.

The legendary queen of gothic horror is back on my big screen, great as always in these roles. But it’s Paul Muller who steels my attention as the sadistic and cynical Dr. Stephen Arrowsmith. The use of black and white, together with Morricone’s soundtrack makes this an atmospheric and brutal piece of horror. It doesn’t rank between the best, but it’s highly entertaining. There’s ghosts, mad scientists, immortal experiments, adultery and torture. Check it out, and enjoy!

Severin’s blu-ray release is just amazing. The feature is looking crisp and good. The extras includes two other (great) films: “Castle of Blood” and “Terror Creatures from Beyond the Grave”. Also audio commentary by Barbara Steele, interviews and featurettes.
