“What a marvelous old house.”

The Fitzgeralds, brother and sister, stumbles over a beautiful house while on holiday at the coast. They buy the place from an old guy and his lovely granddaughter, Stella. There’s rumors about the house being haunted, and the Fitzgeralds together with the village doctor and Stella go together to unravel a murder mystery from the past. It seems to be linked with Stella’s dead mother.

I love ghost stories, and got amazed with the quality of this 1944 flick. I love the mystery part as much as the ghostly scares. The old house with the criminal past, the psychological bit with the young heroine and the tightly written dialogue works fine together. Eerie, scary with a good plot. The characters might seem a bit reserved sometimes, but hell it’s almost 75 years old. Recommended!
