Review: Häxan (1922)

The images of the Devil accompanied with three different music scores that I switched between all through the movie made this a paralyzing and scary time.

“Deep down in the earth’s core lies hell, where those tempted by the devil shall suffer forever.”

A seven part documentary with dramatizing scenes. We learn about the middle ages, witches, nuns, inquisition, torture and the evil himself; Satan.

The movie is almost 100 years old. It’s a silent movie with three different old and new soundtracks. It might be a bit scarier because it’s silent. The images are creepy and haunting, some are on the verge to be silly. Some of the staged scenes use a brilliant combination of backward filming/stop-motion/double exposure that got me pretty impressed. Well played out in something that seems like an early attempt on cinema Exploitation.
